REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA, — The Directorate General of Land Transportation (Ditjen Hubdat) of the Ministry of Transportation promoted the public transport electrification program as an important effort to reduce emissions and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Road Traffic Director of Ditjen Hubdat, Rudi Irawan, stated on Thursday (18/9) that electrification, especially through electric buses, is a key strategy in lowering emissions and improving transport operational efficiency.
This step was implemented through a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with the theme “Electrification of Public Transport in Support of Clean Energy Use.” Rudi stressed that the initiative supports the national target of achieving net zero emissions by 2060 set out in the national development planning document.
The land transport sector is still one of the largest contributors to emissions in Indonesia, especially with the increasing number of motor vehicles, especially private vehicles. Rudi called on all parties, including central government, regions, industry, academia, and the public to work together to accelerate the use of clean energy in land transportation.
Chairman of the Jakarta Regional People's Representative Council, Khoirudin, highlighted that about 67 percent of air pollution in Jakarta comes from public vehicles. In an effort to reduce pollution, it has initiated the switching of TransJakarta buses from fuel oil to electric buses. There are currently 260 electric buses, and an addition of 200 units is planned this year, with a target of 10,000 electric buses by 2030.
The utilization of this electric bus based on the results of the evaluation was able to reduce emissions by up to 20 thousand tons of carbon in Jakarta, which received an appreciation in the form of a Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Certificate from the Ministry of Environment.
Mayor of Bogor, Dedie A. Rachim, supports the environmental-based policy prioritized by the Provincial Government of DKI Jakarta. In addition to the transition to electrical energy, Dedie suggested the need to improve other sources of pollution and ensure electrical energy is generated from environmentally friendly combustion systems, given that today electricity is still obtained from 32 thousand tons of coal.
Dedie also appreciated DKI Jakarta's initiative connecting TransJakarta services to Bogor, which helped reduce the use of private vehicles, one of the main contributors to pollution.
